The Senate confirmed the appointment of Bill Northey, the current Iowa Agriculture Secretary, as U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) undersecretary for farm production and conservation. CropLife America (CLA) supports this appointment and looks forward to working with Mr. Northey as he steps into this position.

“After a lengthy delay, the Senate’s confirmation of Bill Northey demonstrates the positive direction agricultural leadership and policy is moving in Washington D.C.,” stated Jay Vroom, president and CEO of CLA. “More importantly, growing attention to America’s farmers and ranchers is steering conversations on the Hill and having Northey, a fellow farmer, assist in formulating the farm bill alongside Secretary Sonny Perdue will be invaluable. Northey’s experience in biofuel production and land conservation extends far past his fields in Iowa, and we are keen to see his first steps at USDA and how he can help move agriculture forward,” concluded Vroom.

Northey is a fourth-generation Iowa farmer and grows corn and soybeans near Spirit Lake. He graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Agricultural Business, and before being elected as Iowa Secretary of Agriculture in 2006, he held positions as President of the National Corn Growers Association and Chairman of its committees, as well as serving as an active member of the Iowa Farm Bureau and the Iowa USDA Farm Service Agency State Committee.
