General Manager

CHS Member Cooperative in Pomeroy, Washington

CHS Member Cooperative Pomeroy Grain Growers, Inc. is seeking to hire a General Manager. A very successful 3 location cooperative in Southeastern Washington, Pomeroy Grain Growers is an $80+ million dollar coop that consists of $75 million full service grain and $5 million agronomy/fertilizer facilities, crop protection, custom application and seed.

This position requires grain operations and marketing experience, accounting skills as well as an understanding of finance / budgeting, planning and business process controls. Also, must have good communication skills, supervisory, public relations and organizational skills to manage the total operation. The successful candidate will work extensively with a 5-person board. The ideal candidate must be able to make decisions and work independently. The ideal candidate must be detailed oriented with excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

General Manager Responsibilities: 

Directs and coordinates the activities of the organization in accordance with the policies and procedures adopted by the Board of Directors to obtain optimum efficiency and economy of operations by performing the following duties personally, or through subordinate supervisors and employees.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (include the following and other duties may be assigned)

  • Supervise the detailed operations of the cooperative.
  • Follow sound business principles in the supervision and coordination of the activities of the cooperative.
  • Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system.
  • Responsible for providing each member of the Board of Directors an agenda, manager’s report and comparison of the financial condition of the cooperative before each regularly scheduled board meeting.
  • The manager should be able to sufficiently understand the financial standing and condition of the cooperative and be able to assist and/or train the board on understanding and interpreting cooperative financials.
  • Conduct the cooperative’s business economically and avoid waste without curtailing the services which members and patrons may expect.
  • Maintain the lowest level of expense possible and be consistent with good business practices.
  • Responsible for developing and presenting an annual budget of anticipated income and expected operating costs of the cooperative to the Board of Directors.
  • Responsible for making recommendations for new facility and equipment additions and replacements; departmental and combined statements of operations cash flow forecasts; and source and use of funds forecasts.
  • Responsible for establishing programs to improve the cooperative’s member and public relations.
  • Responsible for researching and seeking new operational methods and ideas that will benefit the cooperative and its membership.
  • Responsible for managing all company employees and being accountable for personnel expenses, employee hiring and employee training.
  • Responsible for promoting the cooperative in industry related organization and events.

Supervisory Responsibilities: 

Manages all Department Heads who supervise the total employee base in the Agronomy Department, Administration, and Grain Department. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these departments. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and/or Experience: 

Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university; and/or a minimum of five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in grain and agronomy business. The position will require professional leadership and communication skills. Candidates need to have knowledge in financial statements and use of good process controls.

Language Skills:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills: 

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability: 

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
